Palo Alto dance teacher helps autistic children blossom with motor and social skillsby Rebecca Wallace

Ehud Krauss embraces you when you've just met. He vaults into conversation feet-first, sometimes retreating into his native Hebrew to search for an English word but then jumping back in.

But when he works with autistic children, it's like he's holding snowflakes. The tall Palo Alto dance teacher slips off his tennis shoes and sits on the carpet with a circle of preschoolers in white socks. He treats them with infinite gentleness.

    To be a Better Teacher

    Summary:
Animated, Autumn 2002. What propels a dance teacher for whom quality of performance in teaching is as important as technical precision in students' dance? A new US-UK initiative has set out to understand what and how dancers gain from their teaching. In particular, what special challenges and thrills lie in teaching students - the imprisoned, mentally or physically handicapped, or the elderly - who will never carry their knowledge of dance into any of the expected norms, places, or purposes of the art? Here, Ehud Krauss and Dr. Shirley Brice-Heath explain the search of an artist-teacher and linguistic anthropologist for answers to these questions.

IT IS A CRISP, clear winter afternoon and Ehud Krauss, dressed in sweats and cross-training shoes, is standing impatiently in front of the first of several locked metal security doors at the entrance to Juvenile Hall in San Jose, California. As soon as he is buzzed into this jail for convicted juvenile offenders, Krauss begins teasing the probation officers. "Hey, boss, have a good weekend," he jokes as he passes through, suggesting they will be incarcerated along with the inmates for the weekend....

Jazz Dance Company Cultivates Freedom of Expression

(11-21) 04:00 PDT PALO ALTO -- When 17-year-old Daynee Lai- Krauss moved to Palo Alto from Honolulu in 1980, she signed up for classes at Zohar Dance Company even though she had never danced in her life. It was either that or badminton. ``I didn't fit in very well, and I didn't have anything to do here,'' the 34-year-old Palo Altan says. ``I was always a quiet person and I felt very secure here. This gave me an outlet to express myself.''

She found a home that nurtured her natural jazz dance talent and gave her opportunities to teach and choreograph. After stints in New York and Europe, she returned to the Peninsula and made her ``family'' official in 1989. She married the company's founder and director, Ehud Krauss.
